"I've loved horses since I was a small child. One of my best friends, Ronda, got horses and ponies when we were in grade school, probably 2nd, 3rd grade. She lived just up the road a couple houses and I could go behind my house up on the bank and watch her and her family ride in their fields every evening. I would watch and pray that I would some day have a horse of my own. I found six 4-leaf clovers during those evenings I would watch them ride, right where I stood. I put them in the first bible I ever owned, it was from my grandma. I still have the bible with the clovers in it. I was able a few times to to go to my friend Ronda's and ride "Babe" and "Bud", two small ponies she had. I had the time of my life! It was absolute heaven to me!
On the other side of my house, around the curve, lived another girl, Sandy, who was 7 years older than me, and she had horses too. She rode up the road past my house almost every evening. I would stand in my front yard and stare at her until she was out of sight. I wanted to be her, riding like the wind! I spent my time praying for a horse. I would draw pictures of me and my friends riding horses.
When I was 19 years old I got my first horse, Shiloh. He was a grade Quarter/Thoroughbred Cross. He was 17 hands and I loved him with all my heart. He was my life. Hours and hours we spent together for years and he was the best horse in the world! He had been owned by Sandy, the girl that rode up the road past my house all the time. I got to ride with Sandy, we rode a lot together over the years and we are still the best "horsey" friends!
I have always had horses in my life, and like all of you I've had my ups and downs, broken bones. All the hard work, carrying, packing, slopping thru the mud, busting and thawing water, hauling, the frustrations, late nights, early mornings...but to me, there is nothing in this world like the feeling I get when my leg swings over that saddle, foot goes in the stirrup, and the reins are picked up...NOTHING." ---Julie Russell
